Perry is the daughter of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Her first television roles were two appearances on the show as Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne which was played by her mother. Her parents, however, didn't want her to perform until she turned an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry stated she felt timid to perform in high school but began acting at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring from Boston University. Perry managed to get minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent when she finished her degree. The feeling of homelessness, however, led her back to California and she returned working in the stage. The Other Place was performed by her and her mother on Broadway in 2013. Perry was in the show with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 in The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played nine roles in the ABC film The Family, in 2016. In 2017, Perry played a supporting role in the ABC political drama Scandal in which her father was the main character. The character she played was an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. Despite her family link to the character, she was offered the part through an audition.
